I was trying to install Oracle 8i Personal Edition 8.1.6 on my PC using the Oracle Universal Installer CD-ROM. When I get to the File Locations screen where I have to select the destination ("Enter or select the full path for your Oracle Home"), the information is already in there for the D:\ drive:
D:\STAGE\COMPONENTS\ORACLE.SWD.JRE\1.1.7.24\DATAFILES/EXPANDED/
JRE/WIN32\BIN\..\\Oracle\Ora81
I can’t use this as my destination because I only have one CD drive (D:\ drive), so I selected the C:\ drive for my destination. When I do this, an Inventory Location screen pops up, prompting me to specify a base directory for installation files. I select the C:\ drive for this, then OK. Then I select Next at the File Location screen. A Loading Product Information screen comes up and the loading begins. Then an Error message comes up saying, “There was a problem in assessing the staging area. Please make sure the specified values for ‘Source’ and ‘Destination’ are valid.
What can I do to resolve this problem so that I can install Oracle? I have Windows ME on my computer. My computer is a Dell Pentium III at 1GHz, 128MB SDRAM. The CD-ROM I used is for Windows ’98. I also used the CD-ROM for Windows NT 2000 and encountered the same problem.
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
